Video of the Week - 'Genomics: making sense of genetic information helping to improve healthcare'.

Genomics is about making sense of genetic information and using that to learn about human biology to improve the way we develop drugs and healthcare.

Genomics plc was founded three years ago by four academics from the University of Oxford and wanted to help transform healthcare and now they've grown to over 30 people

They saw a world in which in maybe ten or so years time there would be a billion people on the planet whose genomes had been read and in many cases that information will be linked to information about them through healthcare records or through wearables.

Genomes are the information contained within each person’s DNA. Today, some 100,000 people have had their genomes read and that is expected to rise to a billion within 10 years.

Genomics plc has built a database that can be used to identify relationships between genetic variation and human disease.

Using genetic data has the potential to reduce costs and improve the efficiency of pharmaceutical companies, ultimately making drugs cheaper for the NHS and its users.
