Metrion Biosciences is pleased to announce it will be hosting its third webinar in the 'Ion Channels in Drug Discovery Webinar Series' on Tuesday 30th November at 16:00 BST. The third Speaker in the webinar series will be Professor David Sheppard from the University of Bristol.

David will present "Cystic Fibrosis: Rescuing Faulty Channels with Targeted Therapies"

Presentation Abstract:
Treatment of the life-shortening genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF) has been transformed by the development of orally-bioavailable small molecules, which target the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) termed CFTR correctors and potentiators. This seminar will highlight research that paved the way for the development of these small molecule CFTR modulators and discuss some recent studies that investigate the potential of combinations of CFTR potentiators to restore greater function to faulty CFTR channels in CF.

David is Professor of Physiology at the University of Bristol. He investigates the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), its dysfunction in cystic fibrosis (CF) and rescue with small molecules. David’s interest in CF began studying intestinal ion channels with Francisco V. Sepúlveda (AFRC Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetic Research, Babraham). After his PhD, David investigated neuronal ion channels with Fernando Giraldez (Valladolid University) before studying CFTR with Michael J. Welsh (University of Iowa). Returning to the UK, David was a BBSRC Advance Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh before joining the University of Bristol.
