South West Advanced Therapies (SWAT) Network Event
The South West Advanced Therapies Hub are delighted to invite you to their inaugural virtual networking event. This will showcase the Advanced Therapy work being carried out in the South West, providing an opportunity to share learning, build networks and promote our region as an exciting growth area.
Dr James Griffin Clinical Director Therapeutics NHSBT and consultant Haematologist University Hospitals Bristol & Weston will deliver a keynote entitled “Bringing Advanced Therapies to Patients in the South West”. The event will also profile a number of organisations active in Advanced Therapies in the region and is kindly supported by the BIA, the West of England Combined Authority's Invest Bristol & Bath service, and IP attorneys Greaves Brewster.

Georgina Treen
Georgina joined the BIA in April 2019 as Events Executive, having previously worked for several international membership associations. Most recently she was responsible for the end-to-end organisation and delivery of a global events series, working at the UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment. Georgina has a BA in International Relations with French and German from the University of Exeter and maintains links with the University as a committee member for their Alumnae group. During the third year of her degree Georgina lived and worked in Basel, Switzerland, completing an internship at Tennis Europe, where she first gained experience working on international conferences and events.

Steve Bates OBE
What does your role at BIA involve?
Steve Bates is the CEO of the UK Bioindustry Association, the UK’s Trade Association for innovative life science companies with over 550 members. Steve is the visible face of the vibrant UK life sciences industry to government and media. He serves on the UK Government’s Life Sciences Council and the UK Biosecurity Leadership Council. Steve was a founder member of the UK Government’s Vaccine Taskforce in the Covid crisis, sitting on its steering Board alongside Kate Bingham. He is active member and former chair the International Council of Biotech Associations and has been a board member of EuropaBio since 2015.
Previous experience & achievements
Steve has championed, with government, effective industrial incentives like the Biomedical Catalyst, which have crowded in private sector investment into UK SMEs. He is a driving force behind the scale up agenda, spearheading policy agenda to unlock UK pension fund capital into productive UK growth in life sciences. He has forged several links for the sector across the USA, Europe and in China. In his time at the BIA, Steve has developed new member groups focused on cell and gene therapy, genomics and engineered biology. A strong advocate of partnership working, Steve champions sector collaboration with research charities and academia. Proud to lead an organisation with a diverse Board with over 40% female representation, Steve is committed to next generation talent and developing the skills needed for the sector to flourish. Before joining the BIA in 2012, Steve worked for Genzyme and was advisor to the UK Government of Tony Blair working on NHS reform and the Northern Ireland peace process. He was made OBE for services to innovation in 2017 and became a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Science in 2020.
James Griffin
Dr Griffin is a consultant haematologist working for NHS Blood and Transplant as the Clinical Director Therapeutics covering Apheresis, Stem Cell and Immunotherapy Laboratories, British Bone Marrow Registry and UK Cord Blood Bank. He is also part of the clinical team at University Hospitals r Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust, he specialises in myeloma and stem cell transplantation and is the lead for the autologous transplant program. Dr Griffin completed his PhD in adoptive Immunotherapy at UCL working with Professors Pule, Chakraverty, Stauss and Morris. This built on an interest in cellular immunology which started with a BSc in Cellular and Molecular Pathology at University of Bristol.
Carolyn Porter 2020
Carolyn is CEO of CytoSeek a spin-out company from University of Bristol. CytoSeek is a discovery-stage biotech company developing the next generation of cell therapies to treat cancer using its pioneering cell-membrane augmentation technology. CytoSeek is applying its technology to enable development of more effective CAR-T cell therapies for the treatment of solid tumours. Carolyn has 20 years leadership experience working with spin-out companies in the Oxford ecosystem and previously held roles in Novartis and Chiron.
Remy Martin
Remy is Head of Business Development at eXmoor Pharma. Remy business development career spans both commercial and research environments. This allows him to engage, discuss and understand clients’ needs in detail. He has an extensive knowledge of cell culture, advanced therapies, bioprocessing, process control and upstream process development which he utilises across a variety of interesting and innovative projects in his role at eXmoor.
Richard Seabrook
Richard leads EBI engagement with SMEs, investors and major companies for the translation of new health interventions. Previously Richard led the Business Development Team at Wellcome and managed multiple product development translational funds put to work with industry, SMEs, not for profits and universities. Key outcomes include the discovery of KAE609, PanRaf, Plazomicin, Ridinilazole, Xanamem and NSR-REP 1, commercialisation of the molecular diagnostic platform SAMBA, also CardioResp and McGrath5 laryngoscope. He was a Non-Executive Director for both Wellcome Trust Trading Ltd and Wellcome International Ltd, a board Observer for the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, ex officio board member Global Health Innovation Technology Fund and board observer with portfolio SMEs. He was also a strategic advisor for both Royal Academy of Engineering and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Currently Richard runs his own advisory business, 360Biomedical and remains a senior advisor for Wellcome, various businesses and biomedical charities including the UK Association for Medical Research Charities.
Jon Smythe
Jon is a Clinical Scientist with a PhD in Molecular Biology and leads multiple scientific teams developing novel cell and gene therapies through clinical trials. This work is undertaken in collaboration with universities, hospitals and commercial partners and builds on NHSBT’s regulatory expertise gained from supporting around 50% of stem cell transplants in the NHS. NHSBT is increasing capacity in these areas with a new cell therapy facility opening in the North later this year and the expansion of its Clinical Biotechnology Centre for plasmid and viral vector manufacturing under GMP on the Bristol site.
