BIA response to DEFRA's consultation on the regulation of genetic technologies

The BIA has responded the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) consultation on the regulation of genetic technologies. In our submission, the BIA:

  • Highlighted health, environmental and health benefits of gene editing
  • Urged the UK to diverge from the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU)’s judgement to regulate gene edited products as genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
  • Called on the UK to adopt a science-based and innovation-friendly regulatory framework for gene editing and GMOs that regulates the product instead of the process
  • Called on the Government to put in place an exemption scheme for medicines containing or consisting of GMOs undergoing clinical trials
