MarraBio at a glance

MarraBio designs, manufactures and supplies low-cost engineered bioactive proteins for cell production in the research, therapeutic and cultivated-meat sectors.

About MarraBio

MarraBio is a pioneering company that specializes in the design and production of proprietary engineered bacterial protein polymers. These polymers replicate the actions of natural bioactive proteins, such as growth factors and extracellular matrix proteins, yet go beyond the current state-of-the-art through enhanced functionality, ease of use, and ultra-low cost. The company has developed a platform technology based on the Caf1 protein. This small inert and highly-stable bacterial protein, naturally self-assembles into long modular polymers which area ideally suited for cell culture applications. Using a patented process, MarraBio can produce Caf1 in vast quantities via the fermentation of bacteria. Recombinant protein engineering techniques are used to genetically encode bioactive peptide motifs into the Caf1 subunit at locations where they will be readily and stably presented to cells in culture. Post processing allows MarraBio to combine different modular bioactive subunits to form multifunctional materials, like a “molecular Lego”. Initial products are replacements for cell adhesion molecules and expensive growth factors. MarraBio is working with researchers and companies in several fields to develop bespoke Caf1 products that meet their specific needs.
