Deadline: 7 July 2025

British Heart Foundation PhD Programme funding opportunity

The University of Birmingham and University College London are seeking industry support for an application to the British Heart Foundation 4-year PhD programme call. The theme concerns ‘Pathways to cardiovascular health through novel imaging and AI’ and will focus on cardiovascular biology, imaging technologies and computer sciences to develop innovative solutions for cardiovascular health and disease.

Support does not necessarily require a financial contribution. For example, an in-kind contribution could help upskill the next generation of scientists and equip them with the diverse skills needed to drive cardiovascular research towards patient benefit with opportunities for student placement, mentorship and/or training in technical or management skills.

Alternatively, there is the opportunity to shape individual projects together with academic supervisors, providing a fantastic opportunity for collaboration in an area that could be tailored to your interests in the form of a PhD studentship project with funding from the BHF and the Universities.

The programme comprises three interwoven research themes:

  1. Imaging Across the Scales (molecules to man) – Development and application of multiscale imaging modalities to study molecular, cellular and whole tissue dynamics, cardiovascular inflammation, and electrophysiological function, utilising optical (microscopy, photoacoustics), ultrasound, X-ray phase contrast, and MRI techniques.
  2. AI and Data Science in Cardiovascular Research – Leveraging machine learning and big data analytics to improve cardiovascular disease modelling, patient stratification, risk prediction, and enhance image capture and analysis.
  3. Models, Systems and Engineering – Mathematical and numerical models of hemodynamics, disease processes, artificial valves, smart structures and imaging systems to deepen understanding and facilitate design.
