Mendelian is a digital health company on a mission to accelerate the diagnosis of rare diseases. Its Clinical Decision Support Medical Device, MendelScan proactively scans through de-identified healthcare records at scale, and finds patients with phenotypic patterns of 40+ rare diseases but who lack a diagnosis. It is deployed over 1.4 million patients in the NHS. As recipients of the 2023 NHS AI Award, the company is poised for national scale-up. To develop each disease module on the platform, Mendelian works with pharmaceutical partners, NHS clinical champions and patient advocacy groups to develop bespoke capabilities. To date it has worked with eight of the largest global pharmaceutical companies to develop disease capabilities in therapeutic areas of interest. Mendelian’s team is a collaboration of doctors from top clinical backgrounds (NHS, NICE, WHO), data scientists from the UK’s top universities (Oxford, UCL, King’s), and commercial leaders from top life sciences organisations (e.g. Pfizer, NHS). The company has benefitted from several Innovate UK innovation grants, has published in top rare disease journals (e.g. Orphanet), and is the winner of many industry awards.
