Wellcome Sanger Institute

We focus on three objectives where large-scale genomic data is essential for advancing fundamental knowledge, each of which will deliver opportunities for societal benefit, and the combination of three reflects where Sanger can have the most impact:

Disease genomics – deciphering the molecular underpinnings of health and disease

Engineering genomics – elucidating how DNA sequences encode biological functions

Planetary genomics – understanding planetary biology through genome sequences of diverse species

The Sanger Institute continues to embody scientific openness and sharing. Today, the Sanger Institute infrastructure supports distinct science programmes in Human Genomics, Somatic Genomics, Generative Genomics, Cellular Genomics, Tree of Life, and Parasites & Microbes.  

The Institute continues to innovate on delivering its mission; this has resulted in an increased emphasis placed upon translation and democratisation of Sanger science,  as both a critical outlet for research activities and a strategic opportunity to maintain Sanger’s position as a global knowledge leader in genomes and biodata.
