Oxford Medical Products publish clinical trial results of Sirona, a non-pharmacological treatment for overweight and obesity, in the peer-reviewed journal Obesity
Oxford Medical Products are thrilled to announce that the results of their latest randomized controlled trial have been published in the peer-reviewed journal, Obesity!
Key results from the trial:
- Participants taking Sirona consumed ~400 fewer calories per day compared with placebo.
- Participants on Sirona achieved up to 13.5% total body-weight loss at just 24 weeks.
- Individuals with class I obesity lost an average of 6.4% of total body weight at 24 weeks.
- Outstanding safety and tolerability: no serious adverse events and 95% adherence to dosing.
This trial demonstrated Sirona is a safe, affordable, and non-pharmacological treatment to support long-term weight management. Sirona is a simple, safe, well tolerated oral treatment option for people with overweight and obesity with the potential to be used either instead of or possibly alongside current anti-obesity medications. This is a very exciting potential option for treatment of both overweight and obesity.
- Professor James Byrne, Chief Investigator of the study from University Hospital Southampton.
Sirona is a drug free hydrogel pill that once swallowed and in the stomach, expands to reduce the available volume of the stomach, supressing appetite and reducing calorie intake, leading to weight loss. Sirona remains in the stomach for several days, providing sustained appetite suppression before breaking down into smaller pieces and passing naturally.
Sirona is addressing two key unmet needs in the weight management market:
- Obesity prevention: Sirona will be accessible to anyone with a BMI over 25, enabling earlier intervention in the course of weight gain. It provides an option for individuals in the overweight category (BMI 25–30) who are currently ineligible for GLP-1 therapies such as Ozempic and Mounjaro.
- Weight maintenance post GLP-1s: to help individuals who have discontinued GLP-1s to maintain their weight long term and prevent weight regain.
Oxford Medical Products plan to launch Sirona in the UK first in 2027
