Synthetic and engineering biology, a joint opportunity for the UK and Switzerland

This new report captures insights from the 2025 British-Swiss SynBio Summit, organised by the consortia of the University of Bristol, the Swiss Business Hub UK, Lucideon and the BIA. The Summit brought together leaders from academia, industry, investment, and government to examine how the UK and Switzerland can deepen collaboration in synthetic and engineering biology for health and life sciences.

Drawing on insights from roundtables held in October 2025, the report sets out shared challenges and practical recommendations across regulation, skills, bioprocessing, AI and commercialisation. These insights align with BIA’s focus on enabling a pro-innovation regulatory environment, strengthening UK manufacturing and skills base, and supporting SMEs developing cutting-edge engineering biology applications.

The report highlights the complementary strengths of both countries, the need for closer regulatory cooperation, and the value of coordinated action to accelerate translation and scale-up. It provides a framework for UK-Swiss engagement that can help advance global leadership in engineering biology.
