Join us on World Parkinson's Day 2018 for another popular networking event, focusing on new patient centric funding models for accelerating cures. How can charities and passion capital contribute to different biotech models and improved business outcomes. We will hear from Parkinson’s UK about their Virtual Biotech, the Dementia Discovery Fund, AMRC and LifeArc and how they seek to invest in early-stage projects to improve patient outcomes.

Dr Laurence Barker
Laurence joined SV Life Sciences as Chief Business Officer of the Dementia Discovery Fund (DDF). Prior to this, Laurence was Head of Investment Management in Worldwide Business Development at GSK where he was responsible for managing GSK’s venture investment portfolio. In addition, he led licensing transactions for the pharma R&D business. Prior to GSK, Laurence worked in business development at biotech companies Syntaxin and MorphoSys.Laurence holds an MBA from Cambridge and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Tübingen, Germany.
Dr Arthur Roach
Arthur Roach is Director of Research at Parkinson’s UK, where he is responsible for the strategy to convert the demands and priorities of people living with Parkinson’s into better treatments and a deeper understanding of the condition. In the current five-year strategic period Parkinson’s UK is investing £40 million in university research grants, international collaborations and data sharing, drug discovery and early clinical development of new treatments, and promoting the greater involvement and participation of people with Parkinson’s in research. He brings to this role over 25 years of experience of research into Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases and the discovery and development of new treatments. After earning a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology at Caltech and postdoctoral work at Cornell Medical College Arthur was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics of the University of Toronto. He has held director-level positions in international pharmaceutical companies in the US and Europe (DuPont, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck Serono) with responsibilities for preclinical research, therapeutic area strategy and in-licensing. Arthur is also the founder of Chord Therapeutics, President of the Geneva Pharma Network (a regional association for pharma, biotech and medical device professionals) and a director of Keapstone Therapeutics Ltd.
Aisling Burnand MBE
Aisling Burnand has been the chief executive of the Association of Medical Research Charities since September 2014. Aisling began her career in communications, working mostly in the private sector. She headed international media relations for Rhône-Poulenc and was a director at the Rowland Company. She joined the BioIndustry Association (BIA) as its first director of public affairs in 1998, before becoming chief executive in 2003. At the BIA she championed UK biosciences, leading on issues including regenerative medicine and animals in research. In 2007 Aisling received an MBE for services to science. In 2009 Aisling joined Cancer Research UK, where she was executive director of policy and public affairs. During her tenure the charity secured the implementation of point of sale legislation preventing children from viewing cigarettes in shops, and the Sunbeds Act to protect young people from the dangers of sunbeds. Since 2012 Aisling has run DNA Coaching providing support for senior leaders in business and the not for profit sector. She is a Trustee of LifeArc, and has been a Trustee of Campaign for the Advancement of Science and Engineering (CaSE) (2011- 2017) and is currently a member of: the UK Clinical Research Collaborative (UKCRC), Research Advisory Group to NHS Digital, OSCHR Sub board on BioInformatics, Life Science Industry Strategy Board, Brexit Health Alliance, and the Brain Tumour Charity Patient Mandate group.
Dr Madhu Madhusudhan
Dr Madhu Madhusudhan has over two decades experience in R&D and business development earned in companies which include multinationals, start-ups and IP consulting firms in the UK, New Zealand and India. His current role as the Senior Business Manager (Charity Sector) at LifeArc is to focus entirely on facilitating translation and impact of charity-funded research, thus enabling medical research charities to maximise benefits to patients. LifeArc (the new name for MRC Technology) is a medical research charity with a 25 year legacy of helping scientists and organisations turn their research into treatments and diagnostics for patients. We have helped develop treatments for advanced melanoma, non-small-cell lung cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease. Our new strategy enables us to reinvest our earnings from these discoveries (at least £30 million) in two funds specifically established to help progress early stage research.
