Manufacturing Programme Manager

  • Location: Bloomsbury Square, London
  • Reports to: Associate Director, Policy, Public Affairs and Investor Relations
  • Salary: £40,000pa; We also welcome proposals for flexible arrangements and secondments

The Manufacturing Development Manager is a key role for the BioIndustry Association (BIA), which is the UK’s trade association for biotechnology and innovative life sciences. We work with incredible entrepreneurs, scientists, business leaders, regulators, policymakers and advisors in a fascinating, vital and booming sector which spans global connections and the entire life sciences ecosystem in the UK.

This new role will provide much-needed support and development of the BIA’s work in BioManufacturing. This significant and growing community is a vital part of the Biotechnology and Life Science industry, and this role will provide direct liaison, support and development of this area; both within the BIA and to a broad range of policymakers and external stakeholders.

The primary role is to assist and support the work of the BioProcessing Community Leader, whilst developing the Association’s policy and public affairs representation in this area. The position will work directly with our Manufacturing Advisory Committee, convening and providing administrative support to this group and its various activities.

It will require direct liaison and network building with the key opinion leaders in this sector. You will also assist in developing the biomanufacturing response to new initiatives in sustainability and new modalities such as mRNA.

Plus, you will develop close knowledge of the support organisations working to grow these companies and build networks and links across all the relevant government and non-governmental organisations in this sector.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate their ability to build networks and work independently bringing multiple partners together. This will include senior stakeholders so the candidate must be comfortable operating at this level. You should have experience of facilitating multiple stakeholder meetings and expect to do this in building a variety of partnerships and the BIA’s manufacturing community.

The candidate will need to be proactive in their approach to the role, demonstrate excellent relationship management skills, be motivated to drive forward activity and new initiatives.

The candidate will be highly articulate – both in person and in written work and be able to demonstrate excellent attention to detail.

The candidate will ideally have demonstrable knowledge and experience of working in the biomanufacturing sector. This could be specific industry experience or working for a relevant industrial support organisation.

Knowledge or awareness of the relevant government departments and how they relate to the biomanufacturing and biotechnology agendas is also highly desirable. Whilst the candidate may not have specific experience of policy work, it is essential that you can demonstrate an interest in this area and in influencing related government agendas.

It is desirable that you have knowledge and ideally experience of the industrial, public sector and academic partners which work across this sector for example:

  • The Catapult Network
  • Innovate UK
  • Relevant industry trade bodies
  • Relevant manufacturing hubs and incubators

For clarity, we would expect the candidate to have EITHER relevant industry experience (with a strong interest in developing policy knowledge and experience) OR to have demonstrable experience of influencing government agendas (with a strong interest in learning about biomanufacturing).

The candidate should be educated to degree level or comparable and show a suitable level of adaptability to comprehend (and articulate) complex frameworks and technologies.

The role can be a permanent appointment.

The BIA are also flexible regarding how the role could be delivered and welcome proposals for flexible delivery or secondments.

The correct candidate is the most important element of this person specification and the BIA are willing to discuss specific terms with interested parties.
