BIA webinar: Update on Opportunities in China: policy and regulatory changes
The BIA, BioCentury and the China-Britain Business Council were delighted to host a webinar in our series of updates on opportunities in China for UK biotechs. This update focused on recent policy and regulatory reforms in China that impact biopharma innovation, and which may create new cross-border strategies for UK companies. A panel of experts presented on their viewpoint of these changes, followed by Q&A and a full panel discussion.
Speakers
Josh Berlin
Josh leads BioCentury’s Business Development team and is responsible for building BioCentury’s corporate relationships with biopharma executives, investors and key industry stakeholders. He has dedicated much of his career to building cross-border relationships between Asia, in particular China, and the West. In this capacity, Josh created and manages BioCentury’s China Healthcare Summit conference for Chinese and Western biopharma executives and investors, in collaboration with BayHelix. Prior to joining BioCentury in 2014, Josh created and led the emerging markets group for Elsevier Business Intelligence. He is a member of BayHelix, the professional organization for China life sciences executives, and serves on the editorial board of the World Korea Medical Journal. Josh graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Economics and International Relations.
Hamish King
Hamish King is COO at Cisema, a China-focused CRO and regulatory consultancy founded in Munich and Beijing in 2002. A lawyer by training - admitted in Hong Kong and NSW, Australia - Hamish previously worked with UK Magic Circle Firm Linklaters in Hong Kong, and has nearly 10 years' experience in the legal and regulatory fields. He has obtained the RAC and CFA qualifications. Regularly writing articles and speaking on China market access and regulatory pathways, he currently lives in Hong Kong and specializes in NMPA applications of Life Sciences products.
Katherine Wang
Katherine Wang is a partner in Ropes & Gray's life sciences group. Widely regarded as a leading life sciences regulatory lawyer in China, Katherine assists pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies on a wide range of matters, including early-stage discovery, product registration, regulatory/GxP compliance, pricing, reimbursement, clinical studies, promotional practices, product safety issues, government investigations, and risk assessments. Katherine provides day-to-day counseling on issues that life sciences companies face in relation to their interaction with agencies including the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA, formerly the CFDA), the National Health Commission (NHC) and the State Administration of Market Regulation (SAMR), among others. She also assists institutional investors and corporate clients in structuring transactions and conducting regulatory due diligence, including good laboratory practice (GLP), good clinical practice (GCP), good manufacturing practice (GMP) and pharmacovigilance, on investment targets and prospective business partners in China. Recently Katherine has provided critical guidance to clients on a variety of legal and regulatory issues associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, including advising on regulatory requirements related to PPE export and the development of drugs or vaccines, and helping clients navigate evolving developments in the life sciences industry.
Qun Yang
Qun is a Cambridge-based female entrepreneur and studied for MPhil in Therapeutic Sciences at the Queens’ College, Cambridge University. She is co-founder of Biorbyt Ltd, a Cambridge headquartered biotech company manufacturing and supplying bio-reagents to life science communities. Qun has been the driving force of the e-commerce system, branding strategy, and international expansion of Biorbyt. Qun started her professional career as an auditor with Deloitte and then worked for Goldman Sachs and later Deutsche Bank. Qun is a qualified chartered accountant and a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. She is also a holder of other prestigious qualifications, including Chartered Financial Analyst and Financial Risk Manager. Qun has first-hand experience in working with China. She studied for BSc in Finance and Economics at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and learned to speak fluent Shanghai dialects. She is the founding president of the SUFE European Alumni Network and in 2013 she established the research lab in Wuhan and has been managing it since then. As a mother of two and a successful female entrepreneur, her story was featured in Economica magazine. From 2017 to 2018, Qun was an associate at the Cambridge Judge Business School and was appointed as the Executive Director of the Wo+Men’s Leadership Centre at the CJBS.
